Classical Piano
Claire Shu Liu started her professional piano studies at a young age in Shanghai, China, where she also obtained her bachelor's degree in piano performance at Shanghai Conservatory in 2008. In 2012, Claire came to the United States to continue pursuing her life as a classical pianist. She received her master's degree in piano performance in 2014 at the Manhattan School of Music, studied with Phillip Kawin. After that, with a full scholarship, she continued her doctoral study with Ian Hobson at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and obtained her DMA (Doctor of Musical Arts) degree in 2019.
As an active piano performer, some of Claire’s notable performance includes a piano recital in Jane, Spain, 2009; a piano recital at the German Center, Shanghai, as an ambassador of Steinway&Son, 2010; “Night of American and China” in Carnegie Hall, New York, 2014. Piano recitals in Urbana, Illinois in 2015 and 2018, as well as a recital dedicated to Bach’s Goldberg Variations in 2019.
As a music educator, Claire started her official teaching as an assistant to her professor in Shanghai and continues to do so in her studies in the United States. Her students include a wide range of beginners to professionals, with ages ranging from kids to adults. In addition, Claire also worked as an accompanist, and part-time lecturer in musicology classes during her master's and doctoral studies.
Claire worked as a private piano lesson teacher and a group piano class instructor at the Community School of Music and Arts in Mountain View, California for four years before she moved back to New Jersey in 2019. She specializes in helping students to prepare for exams such as RCM, ABRSM, and competitions. She is currently an active member of MTNA and NJMTA and owns her own piano studio in Bergen County.
